Episcopal & Methodist Eucharistic Sharing
by Fr. David Lemburg
Monday June 11th, 2007 an historical event took place at The United Methodist Church's Mississippi Annual Conference at Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson, Mississippi.
Episcopal Bishop Duncan M. Gray III and Methodist Bishop Hope Morgan Ward led the Methodist and Episcopal clergy and latity in a shared Eucharistic Sharing during the Annual Conference of the Mississippi United Methodist Church.
The sharing of Eucharistic worship marks a step closer to fuller connection with each other in the greater body of Christ.
The liturgy had a strong celtic feel to it. The entrance rite was inspired from St. Columba. The Creed was Tírechán's Creed. The Eucharistic prayer was from the Stowe Missal and the Gelasian sacrementary. Thie Eucharist was similar tot he liturgy in the Celi De community in the early 9th C. Ireland. However, the texts used were adopted from the mainstream early Irish tradition and from other early Celtic sources.
The Song leader was the Rev. Frederick L. Brooks with accompanist Mr. Joe Williams. The Piper was the Rev. Rachel Benefield-Pfaff. Service Coordinators were the Rev. Rwth Ashton, the Rev. Jennifer Deaton, the Rev. Debo Dykes, the Rev. Richard Robbins and the Rev. Tom Slawson.
Both Methodist and Episcopal clergy assisted with ministering the elements of communion. One clay chalice held grape juice and crystal chalice held wine.
One Episcopal priest remarked it was a wonderful experience sharing the communion of saints with her paternal grandfather, a Methodist minister, who had pass away.
